When Employers Are Legally Required to Provide Worker Insurance in Bahrain

In Bahrain’s construction, contracting, oil & gas, maritime, and other high-risk industries, workplace accidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses can have serious consequences for workers and their families.

To ensure financial protection, Bahraini labour law requires employers to provide insurance coverage for their employees in certain circumstances.

This blog explains when employers are legally obligated to provide worker insurance, what it must cover, and why it is essential for high-risk jobs.

Legal Obligation to Provide Worker Insurance

Bahrain’s labour regulations require that:

  • All employers must provide workplace injury insurance for their employees, regardless of industry.
  • In high-risk sectors, such as construction and heavy industry, insurance coverage must be comprehensive and include occupational diseases.
  • The employer is responsible for paying the full cost of insurance — it cannot be deducted from the worker’s salary.

What Worker Insurance Must Cover

  1. Medical Expenses – Hospital treatment, surgery, medication, and rehabilitation.
  2. Wage Compensation – Payment for lost income during recovery.
  3. Disability Benefits – Compensation for temporary or permanent disability.
  4. Death Benefits – Financial support for the worker’s family in case of a fatal workplace accident.
  5. Occupational Disease Coverage – Protection against illnesses caused by work conditions (e.g., respiratory diseases from dust exposure).

Employer’s Legal Responsibilities

  • Purchase and maintain valid insurance policies for all workers.
  • Provide insurance documentation to employees upon request.
  • Promptly report workplace accidents to the insurer and the Ministry of Labour.
  • Ensure claims are processed without delay or wrongful denial.

Worker’s Rights

  • Workers have the right to free treatment for work-related injuries or illnesses under the employer’s insurance.
  • No worker can be lawfully terminated while receiving treatment for a workplace injury.
  • If an employer fails to provide insurance, workers can file a complaint with the Ministry of Labour and claim damages.

Example:

A construction worker suffered a back injury while lifting heavy materials. The employer’s insurance covered hospital expenses, rehabilitation costs, and provided partial wage compensation during his three-month recovery period. Without this coverage, the worker would have faced severe financial hardship.

 Best Practices for Workers

  • Ask your employer for proof of insurance before starting work.
  • Keep a copy of your insurance policy or coverage details.
  • Report workplace injuries immediately to ensure claim eligibility.
  • Seek legal help if your insurance claim is delayed or denied.
